0001 Generally speaking, slope
failures and landslides are mainly caused by heavy
rainfall, water/sewer pipe leakage. Water saturation and high pore water pressure weaken the bonds within the rock & soil masses of the slopes (cut
slopes, fill slopes, slopes behind all kinds of retaining walls), causing failures. (March 5, 2016)
0002 High-intensity
rainfall of short duration is a major triggering factor for landslides (March 5, 2016).
0003 Definition of
Landslide: The movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope (March 5, 2016).
0004 In Hong Kong, the wet season (and co-incidentally the most frequent typhoon period) includes second half of May, June, July, August, and September. According to the reports made by the Water
Supplies Department, the amount of rainfall during these 4+ months is almost 10
times the total amount of the remaining year. As a result, slope failures and
landslides are more likely to occur during the wet season. On the other hand,
repair and construction works are best to be done in advance of or after the
